PML-Q has embarked on a full-throttled reorganisation of the party with focus on expanding its vote bank by adding the neglected segments of the general public. This was disclosed by former Chief Minister, Punjab, Ch Parvaiz Elahi during a talk with The News here.
The strategy, according to Chaudhry, is to mobilise both the urban and rural folk at the grassroots level and as part of this strategy, mobilisation of the rural folk is to be done through Kisan convention which “will be a real Kisan convention with the participation of the toiling classes within the farming community”. While some conventions have already been conducted like the one held in Gujranwala, the next one is scheduled for Kasur followed by more visits to more districts, starting from Punjab.
Chaudhry added, “The aim is to reorganise the party and make it effective and popular and people-friendly through all the strata and levels of the society, learning lessons from PML-Q’s popularity in the past.”
Elaborating the Kasur visit plan, the former CM said: “The Kasur visit has dual purpose i.e. reorganisation of the party as well as mustering farming community’s support. This will also provide us an opportunity to identify the office-bearers whose overall performance has not been satisfactory and whose negligence and follies led to the decline of Q-League’s popularity.
“That would also sooner or later lead to induction of new local leaders in keeping with their competence, political far-sightedness and public connectivity. Of course, we are eyeing mass support by way of mobilisation of public opinion.”
Chaudhry said further, “There are still numerous segments of public that have remained neglected by the political cadre of all parties though these neglected segments constitute a major part of the national vote bank. Our strategy is to focus on these ignored segments besides rebuilding our true image of a public service-oriented party that provided efficient service to the public in almost all the pivotal areas of national life without making tall claims”.
Recalling the services rendered by his party, the former CM said, “If PTI’s Aleem Khan bagged such a large number of votes during NA-122 by-election, it was due to the massive development works done by my government when Aleem was my cabinet minister. Even lot of development was done under my instructions in the areas falling in the constituency of PTI’s MPA Mian Aslam Iqbal. We are the ones who introduced 1122 rescue service and Traffic Warden system. The latter system has now been adopted by KP government with appreciation.”
The former CM lamented that many other development works carried out by his government were not allowed to be completed like, for instance, the Wazirabad cardiology institute. “The plan to have an air ambulance system that was to fly from Mayo Hospital Lahore was also not allowed to materialise.”
When asked to comment on the transparency of elections and the process supervised by the Election Commission of Pakistan, the Chaudhry replied, “The CEC is a thorough gentleman but without powers. All powers are in the hands of the four members. The Nawaz government will remain safe and intact till the time these four members remain in the saddle.”
