The clarification issued by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation about the landslide in which they termed the tragedy a ‘natural disaster’ is laughable. Somehow, it seems that the Karachi administration and the Sindh government have formed a nexus to kill Karachiites, one way or the other. Just look at the scale of the disaster – a landslide (in fact it is a slope failure, failed surface under gravity) – and they blamed nature for their bad governance.
Natural disasters do occur throughout the world but then there is some quick relief response to minimise the damage. It is very cheap to buy publicity through distributing cheques among victims than spending comparatively lesser money on natural disaster mitigation measures. It is recommended that a survey be conducted to identify dangerous slopes and then proper countermeasures like earth removal, monitoring cracks opening over time, anchoring dangerous slopes by steel wires and proper, cemented water channels for runoff water during heavy rainfall to avoid percolation.
