An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Friday convicted a man over extortion charges and sentenced him to 10 years in jail.
According to the prosecution, the convict, Muhammad Haneef, had tried to extort Rs10,00,000 from a man named Umair in 2014. The trade-off, however, never occurred as Haneef was arrested.
The court concluded that the prosecution had proved the extortion and possession of an illegal weapon charges and handed down the prison sentence. A fine of Rs50,000 was also imposed.
Robber jailed
A convict, Javed Patni, was jailed for seven years in a robbery case. Patni was arrested during a robbery bid in 2010 from the Baloch Colony area and was said to be a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
A fine of Rs20,000 was also imposed. However, two co-accused in the case, Shakeel and Amir alias Kodu, remain absconding.
