A judicial magistrate on Saturday sent a suspect to police custody for four-day physical remand for allegedly killing a man and wounding five others in a clash during the distribution of rations in Surjani Town.

Thirty-five-year-old Javed Bhatti, an activist of the Jamaat-e-Islami, was killed and five others, including his brother Saleem, Adnan, Azeem, Majeed and Abdullah, injured as six armed men opened fire on them outside his house in the Teaser Town neighborhood on April 14.

Police produced Mudassir, who is said be part of the Rangers force, before a District West judicial magistrate to seek his remand till May 1 for interrogation and arrests of his alleged accomplices.

In his FIR, the deceased's brother alleged that his brother was killed by Mudassir. The other nominated suspects include Abdullah Shah, Hakim, alias Major, and three unidentified persons.

According to the complaint, a conflict occurred on April 13 in the area following mismanagement in a ration distribution drive by the Saylani Welfare Trust. According to the FIR, Bhatti's nephew had complained to him that Abdullah had thrashed him during the drive. When the deceased asked Abdullah about it, the fight escalated and the suspects allegedly beat him too until people of the neighbourhood intervened and tried to make peace between them. The next morning, the firing incident took place in which Bhatti was killed.

The case was registered under the sections 302 (premeditated murder), 324 (attempted murder), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Surjani Town police station.
