Monsoon rains have severely damaged the onion crop in India and its price has shot up to 60 Indian rupees per kilogram. The onion is an essential part of all Indian curries. Thus the Indian government sprang into action and ordered immediate import of onion from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran.
The Indian government is really concerned about the adverse reaction from people in the upcoming elections in Bihar. Sometime back the BJP government had lost the polls in New Delhi to the Aam Aadmi Party and high onion prices and onion shortage was one of the factors for its defeat. Here in our country, the price of onion has gone up to around Rs100 per kilogramme due to its unchecked export to India. Influential exporters are making huge profits at the cost of the common Pakistani right under the nose of the government. This is the difference in the democracies being practised in Pakistan and India.
