ISLAMABAD: A study in India has revealed that at least one in five Indians suffering from mental illness. The lockdown to contain the spread of corona pandemic in India is affecting the mental health adversely.
According to a report appeared in Indian media has disclosed that the Indian Psychiatry Society has noticed a steep rise in the number of patients after coronavirus outbreak in the neighbouring country. The people are more prone to mental illnesses after the outbreak of coronavirus. The recent survey revealed there has been a 20 percent rise in mental illness cases.
It also reveals at least one in five Indians suffering from mental illness. The nationwide lockdown may also be one of the reasons behind this phenomenon. The study claims that people have been living in fear of losing their lives, jobs and businesses. The lockdown has resulted in mental distress and depression.
The drastic increase in the number of mental patients was observed in just two weeks. It also affirms that the global health crisis could be one of the contributing factors. The doctors suggest that the numbers can rise in the days to come. The lockdown has had a massive impact on the lifestyle of people. The people are staying indoors with limited resources.
Most of the population is suffering from anxiety, panic attacks. One of the doctors said that many people are also suffering due to alcohol withdrawal syndromic. The possibility of extension of lockdown has added on to the worries of people. The surging corona positive cases have also added to the panic and distress in majority of people. Staying home under lockdown has no certain timeline and people are losing patience.
