CHARSADDA: Five cops, including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), sustained injuries when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police van in Dilazak area in the limits of Sro Police Station on Saturday evening, sources said.
The sources said that the mobile unit of the Sro Police Station, headed by ASI Amjad Khan, was on a routine patrolling in the area when came under attack.
“The gunmen came out of the roadside field at 8:35pm and opened indiscriminate fire on the police van at Dilazak area,” said an official.
Five cops identified as ASI Amjad Khan, Constable Yousaf, Sajid, Taheen and driver Riaz were wounded, the sources added.
Following the incident, the police reached the spot and shifted the injured cops to the District Headquarters Hospital in Charsadda.
Three of the injured cops were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar due to their precarious condition.
The police launched search operation in the surrounding area at Dilazak but no arrest was made till filing of this report.
Vehicle snatching bid foiled in Buner: The locals on Saturday foiled a bid to snatch a vehicle in Swari bazaar in the limits of Gagra Police Station, sources said.
The sources said that a pickup truck was heading from Naway Killay to Swari bazaar when one Sarzamin alias Shahji, along with his three accomplices, intercepted it as the vehicle reached the bazaar. The motive behind the incident was stated to be an old rivalry.
The sources said that the accused snatched the vehicle’s keys from the driver Behram Khan and wanted to drive it away but the locals managed to foil the bid.
Taking prompt action, the police arrested the accused Sarzamin alias Shahji on the complaint of the driver, Behram Khan, while his three accomplices fled the scene.
Meanwhile, the owner of the vehicle, Bakhtpur Khan, said that an incident of kidnapping at the busy Swari bazaar was lamentable and deplorable.
He asked the Regional Police Officer (RPO), Malakand Range, Azad Khan to take notice of the incident and punish the accused involved in the case.
Houses damaged in Shabqadar attack: Two houses were partially damaged when militants fired two rockets at Shabqadar tehsil early Saturday, official sources said.
The sources said that the militants fired two rockets from an undisclosed location at 1:00 am. One of the rockets hit a boundary wall of the house of Haji Abdul Wahid located at a distance of 100 meters away from the building of the Khwajawas Police Station. The second rocket hit a room at the house of Zahid in Matta Mughalkhel village, which is situated some 200 meters away from the Frontier Constabulary (FC) checkpost, the sources added. However, it caused no casualty.
“The targets of the militants were the police station and FC checkpost, but both the rockets missed the target and hit houses and missed the real targets,” a police official said.
