MULTAN: The Shujabad police on Saturday killed a notorious gangster in an encounter and arrested his two accomplices. Eight rocket launchers and other weapons were also recovered from their possession, but three dacoits managed to escape during the firefight at Mauza Mochipura.
The gangster, Shafiqa Wains, was the ringleader of the most wanted gang with close connections with notorious robbers in interior Sindh and the Chotu gang. He was involved in the murder of four policemen besides large scale killings of civilians in Multan Division. The group is involved in more than 60 cases of robbery, murder and kidnapping.
The News has learnt that the Chotu gang has been closely associated with the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and involved in providing shelter to the militants who provided similar cooperation for fugitives.
Talking to The News, DSP Khawar Zaman Lodhi said more than a dozens of policemen took a part in the encounter.
Shujabad City SHO Omer Draz Khan said a police party led by him on a tip-off encircled the riverine area on Saturday morning at 6am after they exchanged fire with the criminals. During the gunfight, Wains was killed on the spot, while Bashira Pahor and Saadullah alias Sabir of Shorkot were arrested. Three robbers fled the scene, he added.
He said the gang members snatched two bikes on Friday night and were planning at their hideout when the police team encircled the area.
