Dairy farmers increase fresh milk price by Rs10 From Our Correspondent DERA GHAZI KHAN: Local dairy farmers have increased the price of fresh milk from Rs 80 per litre to Rs 90 per litre. A large number of the dairy farms are located in the city, which are fulfilling demand of the people. The consumers express their concern over the increase in the rates and demand the district administration ensure milk supply at the official rate. They believe that the fresh milk collected from dairy farms is of the best quality as compared to the milk supplied by the middlemen door-to-door. The consumers are of the view that the dairy farmers and retailers are getting additional profit as the sale and purchase activity is going unchecked while some of the retailers are selling substandard and low quality milk at the official rate. A consumer, Aftab Khaitran, says that although a campaign against low quality milk and meat has been launched across the province, yet action against the big guns is not being taken. He is of the view that the small units are being fined as usual. It is also necessary to mention that the consumers belonging to the urban localities prefer to purchase the buffalo milk while in the rural locations, the sale of cow milk is at peak. The doctors say that the children as well as the adults are facing the milk-borne diseases due to the consumption of adulterated milk. The dairy farmers say that they cannot sell the high quality fresh milk at Rs 65 due to the high cost of inputs. When contacted, an official of the district government said that the retailers and dairy farm owners were bound to sell quality fresh milk at Rs 65 per litre as decided and announced by the district coordination officer time to time. A market committee official said that they had started action against the dairy farmers and retailers involved in selling milk at exaggerated rates.
