ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is in a quandary over a proposal whether to file a reference against four provincial members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) before the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) or take up the issue in the Parliamentary Committee of Electoral Reforms for the removal of the provincial members of the ECP through constitutional amendment.
According to sources, the legal eagles of the PPP are working on a proposal whether or not to send the reference against four members of the provincial members of the ECP be sent to SJC on the basis of the report of the General Election 2013 Inquiry commission that was headed by Ex-Chief Justice Nasir-ul-Malik which pinpointed irregularities and flaws of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Sources said another proposal was being discussed within the PPP that instead of sending the reference against the four provincial members of the Election Commission of Pakistan, it would be better to take up the issue of the members of the Election Commission of Pakistan for bringing changes in the appointment procedure of the members of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Sources said the legal eagles of the PPP will take up this issue with Co-chairman PPP and former President Asif Ali Zardari in Dubai in a meeting of the PPP leaders which is scheduled to be held in Dubai next Tuesday in which the final decision would be taken whether to take the legal line of sending reference against the four provincial members or deal with it in the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms.
The Pakistan People’s Party had already expressed its no confidence in the ECP in the presence of provincial members and demanded resignations of the four provincial members of the ECP.
Though the PPP had announced not to take part in the local government elections in the presence of the present provincial members of the ECP yet now it has changed its decision while deciding that protest against the incumbent provincial members of the Election Commission of Pakistan shall continue the field shall not be left open.
However, it was decided to continue their protest for the resignations of the members of the ECP and be ready to opt the legal line for their removal on the basis of the Judicial Commission report.
