Food vigilance

The unfit meat scam is not new to the people of this country. Rumours regarding criminal gangs trading in unhealthy meat and conning the public into eating potentially diseased food have been circulating in our society for years. In the event of a crackdown some shops get sealed and butchers and vendors arrested.
It is our obsession with meat that helps increase the frequency of such scams. The Punjab Food Authority’s recent crackdown over food outlets and restaurants for not observing hygiene and the raids on vendors selling unfit meat is highly commendable. Are food authorities in other provinces also taking such action?
