Swarms of locusts attack crops in Jhang
JHANG: Swarms of locusts Friday attacked crops in Athara Hazari, Machiwal, Massan and other areas of the district. After the locusts attack farmers started adopting safety measures. The district administration has issued high alert and asked farmers to beat drums and explode fireworks to minimise the attack of the locusts.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tahir Wattoo has formed teams of agriculture, livestock, revenue and other departments concerned to subside the attack.
In a handout, the DC stated that farmers of the affected areas are being informed about precautionary measures to ward off the locusts and surveillance teams are busy in handling the situation. The agriculture department’s teams have been given the mandate to start spraying in fields to get rid of locusts, the DC said. The agriculture experts were of the opinion that swarms of locusts after a span of almost 57 years appeared in the breeding season of August.
