This letter refers to the news report ‘Pak-India conflict: Trump willing to help as PM Imran Khan seeks US role’ (Jan 22, 2020). I was rather surprised to learn that Imran Khan had claimed that “while relations with India were important, the most pressing concern was Afghanistan.” I was even more puzzled when, previously, our foreign minister seemed to discourage a US withdrawal from Afghanistan. A prolonged American presence will only further destabilize the region. Concerning deescalating tensions with India, China and not the India-centric US would be of greater help to Pakistan in this regard.
