KARACHI: Karachi Wholesalers Association (KWGA) has urged to stop delivering sugar from the borders, expressing concerns over a looming sugar crisis in the country.
KWGA Patron in Chief Anis Majeed and Chairman Malik Zulfiqar Ali in a joint statement on Monday urged the government to take effective measures to prevent the delivery of sugar to Afghanistan from the border, while also preventing speculation to improve the situation.
KWGA leaders said this year, sugar production would be 1.5 million tons less than last year, as it was expected between 50 and 55 million tons. Consumption in Pakistan was also between 50 and 55 million tons.
“This is likely to increase the price of sugar in the wholesale and retail markets,” the statement said. The KWGA said it would cooperate with the government to ensure availability of sugar at reasonable prices to the masses.
