LHC CJ summons commissioner in LWMC case
LAHORE:Lahore High Court Chief Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh on Thursday summoned the Lahore division commissioner along with report on failure of Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) in collection of garbage/waste in the City.
The chief justice also summoned Punjab industries deputy secretary with a report on adherence to fuel quality standards by oil companies. Hearing petitions about smog and waste, Chief Justice Sheikh observed that Lahore had become the polluted City not only due to smog but also due to the fact that Lahore Waste Management Company failed to discharge its statutory obligations. The officials of Lahore Development Authority and EPA told the court that more than five million trees were being planted in Lahore to make it beautiful and also within a year a master plan of the City would be prepared to ensure that no industrial units were established in residential areas.
Advocate Sheraz Zaka, representing a petitioner, argued that Lahore Waste Management Company was not functioning due to maladministration of the provincial government. He said heaps of garbage at several places of the City turned it most polluted city of the world. The chief justice adjourned the proceedings till January 16 and directed the law officer to ensure the Lahore division commissioner and industries deputy secretary appear on the next date of hearing.
