Self-serving lawmakers
Many are congratulating the country’s lawmakers on showing unprecedented unity in passing the amendments to the Army Act of 1952, the Pakistan Air Force Act of 1953, and the Pakistan Navy Ordinance of 1961. Their united stance on the new legislation is commendable. However, these same lawmakers are elected by the people to make laws and develop policies that strengthen the economy and address the needs of the masses. They are responsible for the wellbeing of the citizens of Pakistan. In doing so, they must ensure that basic human rights and access to healthcare and education are easily provided. They also must ensure equal rights for everyone, freedom of speech, and create a physically safe environment.
Unfortunately, our lawmakers only tend to show unity when it is their own benefit. I am sure that if our politicians show even a fraction of the unity they show for self-serving purposes, our country will advance at an unprecedented pace. I wish and pray that we see that happening sooner than later.
