Death toll in Sukkur building collapse rises to nine

SUKKUR: The death toll in Sukkur's building collapse has risen to nine with the removal of two more bodies on Saturday from under the rubble.

The rescue workers pulled out two more bodies from under the building's rubble on Saturday, the third day of the accident. They were identified as Talat Hussain and Wirda w/o Nasir Ali. The three-storeyed building located on the Hussaini road had collapsed on Thursday. Apart from apartments, it also housed shops on the ground floor.

The Sukkur Administration identified the deceased as Jibran s/o Arsalan (01), Shaheen w/o Arsalan(35), Khalida w/o Adnan(35), Firdus w/o Khalid Mahamood (40), Irtaza s/o Talat Mahamood (18) Asif s/o Mahamood Akhtar (40), Saba w/o Muhammed Ali(30) Talat Mahamood s/o Khadim Hussain(60) and Wirda w/o Nasir Mahamood(43). The Namaz-e- Janaza of the nine victims was held at the Municipal ground Sukkur, which was attended by the Divisional Commissioner Sukkur, Deputy Commissioner Sukkur, SSP Sukkur, Mayor Sukkur, PPP MPA Syed Fraukh Shah and others.

The 18 injured were admitted in Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College hospital Sukkur and some of the more serious ones were taken to Chandka Medical College, Hospital Larkana. PTI Woman Wing leader Saba Bhatti told reporters that she had asked governor Sindh for announcing compensation to the victims, besides ordering inquiry into the building collapse. She demanded that 55 buildings identified by the SHC as constructed in violation of SBCA technical parameters be declared dangerous and vacated. The SHC had ordered the district administration to demolish these 55 buildings earlier in 2018.
