This refers to the story 'Kifalat programme to empower poor segments of society: Sania Nishtar’, Dec 29. It is indeed a laudable initiative by Sania Nishtar for poverty alleviation in Pakistan. There are a few worthy emulations, like the Karachi Neighborhood Improvement Project and the Sungi Development Foundation, founded by the late Omar Asghar Khan.
Both these projects effectively mobilized women to improve the standard of living of their families by acquiring skills to work or to run their own businesses. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting should create awareness of the Kifalat programme so that more people can benefit from it.
