Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (PBM) Managing Director Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh on Wednesday said after the success of Pakistan Thalassaemia Centre in federal capital, a new centre would be inaugurated in Chakwal next month, says a press release.
After a visit to the Thala-ssaemia Centre, F-9 Park, with a delegation of Novartis from Singapore, led by Thomas Weigold, regional head of Asia-Pacific and South Africa, he said currently 350 patients are getting treatment in this centre for last five months. He informed that according to available data more than 100,000 children are suffering from the disease in Pakistan and they have a plan to expand this project in other areas as well. He added that as a second step they have completed all arrangements to start a new centre in Chakwal next month.
He informed that they need 700 pints of blood every month for registered patients but they collect only half of it while the rest is being arranged by hospitals, other donors organisations. He informed that almost Rs60,000 to 100,000 are being spent annually on a patient and PBM is assisting only poorest of the poor who could not bear expenses of this deadly disease. Head of delegation, Thomas Weigold expressed satisfaction over the facilities and the quality of treatment provided at the centre.
He said they want to expand their cooperation to eradicate this disease and in this regard they render their full support and services for research.
Bait-ul-Mal MD appealed masses especially youth to come forward and donate blood generously to cater their needs, adding, "Saving one life means saving humanity so people come forward for giving a new life to their fellow being suffering from it". He also asked doctors, experts, philanthropist to join hands with PBM to achieve their target and root out this deadly disease from the country.
