PESHAWAR: Peshawar Combined FC and DFA Chitral set up their title clash after overcoming their respective rivals in the semi-finals of the Ufone Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Football Tournament at Tehmas Khan Stadium here on Monday.
In the first match, an even contest was witnessed as both Peshawar Combined FC and DFA Green Kohat attacked each other’s goal post but were thwarted on each occasion during the first half.
In the second half, Peshawar managed to score through Mohammad Haris in the 63rd minute. Kohat players then tried hard to score an equaliser for their team but strong defence from Peshawar foiled their attempts.
In the other semi-final, DFA Chitral defeated DFA Swabi 5-4 in a sensational penalty shootout. Both the teams played aggressively and were evenly matched. However, despite brilliant field play, neither of the sides could score a goal in regular time.
Before the start of the semi-finals, players, officials and organisers observed a minute’s silence to pay tribute to the martyrs of Army Public School incident.
On Tuesday (today), Peshawar and Chitral will vie for the title at the same venue. The match will begin at 5 pm. In the closing ceremony, singer Saif Ali Khan will be performing the official anthem of the championship which will be followed by a spectacular fireworks show.
As many as 64 teams from 21 cities participated in the tournament as 960 young footballers showcased their skills. The tournament builds on the success of the previous three editions of the same championship in Balochistan. This year, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 64 teams from 21 cities participated to compete for the provincial trophy. 960 young footballers displayed exceptional football talent during the championship.
