Protesters call for canal closure

BAHAWALPUR: Score of locals of Chak 70/DB Yazman Tuesday staged a protest demonstration outside the Bahawalnagar DPO office demanding closure of AP Branch canal to recover a dead body.
Tahir Habib Gill, 22, and six other people were moving in a car when the car fell into the canal on August 14. All other except Tahir were brought out of the canal.
The protesters wanted closure of the canal as high flow of water in the canal is foiling rescuers’ efforts to find the body.
The irrigation department said water flow has been curtailed but the canal could not be closed owing to imperative need of canal water for crops.
CONSECUTIVE ROBBERIES IN SAME LOCALITY: Robbers struck the same locality consecutively in the Kotwali police station area.
Fiver robbers snatched Rs 600,000 and gold ornaments from Ghulam Mustafa known as Baba Chawalwala in Aam Khas Bund Road locality on Monday night.
The dacoits held hostage the family members.
Five days ago three motorcyclists attempted to snatch a motorbike from Guddo outside his house in the same locality and on resistance they shot at and injured him.
Just a week ago four gunmen looted cash and mobile phones from the locals of a saw machine in the same locality. Two weeks ago gangsters shot dead Noor Muhammad during the motorbike snatching incident.
Despite such ‘daredevil’ activities of robbers, the Bahawalpur police claim that law and order situation in the area is satisfactory.
