This refers to the editorial, ‘A tale of horror’ (August 10). The horrendous incident at Kasur has shaken the whole nation. The gruesome abuse had been continuing since 2009 and was believed to be in the knowledge of some of the officials and police but information remained suppressed because of the overwhelming influence of the perpetrators.
The Punjab chief minister has announced a judicial commission to investigate the matter. Government-nominated commissions, as past experience shows, have usually ended up uppressing the truth and protecting suspects. Our criminal justice system is dysfunctional and unable to provide justice. Moreover, this incident may not be one of its kind and may exist in other areas of Punjab as well. The perpetrators of this gory incident should be tried in military courts for speedy conviction. Since this is a crime against humanity and amounts to terrorism, exemplary punishment should be awarded to the accused.
