Elite school

According to media reports, the principal of Aitchison College, Dr Agha Ghazanfar, has been removed because he declined to admit some undeserving scions of some so-called elites.
Aitchison, also known as Chief’s College, was established by the British to educate and groom the offspring of feudal lords who had loyally served them. They expected that the next generations of these feudal lords would serve the British Raj loyally. After Partition, our feudal rulers provided admission to only sons of the elite – mostly undeserving. It is now time that the mission of the college is revised. It should provide quality education to deserving students selected purely on merit. Brilliant students from poor families should be sponsored by the government of Punjab and offered scholarships. Lawrence College, Ghora Gali, is one such example. After all, there are no British masters to be served anymore.
