National Assembly (NA) Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq played a vital role to convince the JUI-F and MQM to withdraw their disqualification motion against the PTI legislators for being absent from the Lower House of the Parliament for 40 consecutive days.
All parliamentary leaders in the NA appreciated the Speaker’s role not only in their meeting but also on the floor of house to keep the house intact. The Speaker did not accept resignations of the PTI legislators for their non-verification.
On Thursday morning, prior of start of the sitting of the NA, the Speaker convened the meeting of the parliamentary leaders at his chamber to resolve the issue of disqualification motion against the PTI legislators.
The outcome of the meeting of the parliamentary leaders with the Speaker prior to Thursday’s sitting of the NA remained positive and the JUI-F and MQM agreed to withdraw their motion.
During the meeting, the Speaker briefed the parliamentary leaders about his efforts to convince the JUI-F and MQM to withdraw their motion. Sadiq told the Parliamentary leaders about his telephonic conversation with the MQM chief Altaf Hussain. Knowing he would be criticised for speaking to Altaf, he contacted the MQM chief keeping in view requirements of his position as the NA Speaker, he said.
“Although some people advised me against talking to the MQM chief, I contacted Altaf Hussain keeping in view my duties as National Assembly Speaker,” he told the parliamentary leaders.
He said that he told Altaf that his criticism against Pakistan army, Rangers and police is uncalled for. He said Altaf had asked him to convey his message to parliamentarians: "They are my own brothers and children, this is my own army, Rangers and police. I don’t hurt them," Sadiq quoted the MQM leader as saying.
He told the parliamentary leaders that when he asked Altaf to express his sentiments openly, he said present my views in the NA session.
