CHITRAL: The 54 wells built around the Chitral town and the nearby villages by the Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) played a crucial role in providing clean drinking water to the flood-hit people. As the floods had washed away all the sources of drinking water, the local people had no other option but to throng the wells from far-off areas to quench their and their families’ thirst. An official of the SRSP said these 44 wells dug under the European Union’s PEACE project played a critical role during the floods in meeting the water requirements of the people. “More than 3,317 people were noticed fetching water from 18 wells in the noon and evening hours every day,” he added.Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf leader Abdul Wali Khan said the wells had not only met the water scarcity in the area but also saved the flood affectees from waterborne diseases. The SRSP official said they would also install cable cars at six locations in Mulkhow and Garam Chashma tehsils to facilitate the people stranded due to the floods. “The floods washed away all the bridges in these areas and the military officials had suggested installing cable cars to meet the needs of the people,” he added.
