The Judicial Commission has dashed to the ground the allegations levelled by the PTI with respect to massive and systematic rigging in the 2013 general elections. Irregularities at some polling stations did occur but to say that the entire election process was marred by rigging – and that too in the absence of solid evidence – was surely not a sane move. With a fledgling democracy like ours that has been gravely stained by recurrent bouts of dictatorship, expecting elections to be free of any irregularities would be akin to living in a fool’s paradise. The 2013 elections should have emerged as a moment of celebration for every political party irrespective of their losses and victories in the election because this was the very first time that we witnessed a peaceful democratic transition of power. On the contrary, the election results permeated egotism and feelings of disbelief in some political parties, particularly the PTI. Irregularities in elections were not as big an issue as the plethora of grave problems that plague the nation at present. Imran should have realised that a common man, embroiled in a battle for his own existence, cares more for the food that he has to earn to feed his family rather than rigging in elections. It is time Imran altered his political strategy and instead of resorting to blame-game and short-cuts did something worthwhile and constructive in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to prove his political mettle – which has somehow not made an appearance yet.
