Says govt ready to meet emergency situation

MULTAN: Punjab Home Minister and Cabinet Committee on Flood Chairman Shuja Khanzada has said that flood situation in the River Chenab is normal while the whole government machinery is vigilant to combat with any emergency situation.
He said this while visiting flood-hit areas across River Chenab on Friday. The minister said that the people did not need to afraid of flood situation as situation was under control. The minister visited Head Muhammadwala, Akbar Flood Band, Bosan Flood Band, Sher Shah Flood Band and Sher Shah Chenab Bridge. The minister said that fresh water discharge at Head Trimmu was recorded 90,000 cusecs, which was extremely normal and there was no immediate threat of flood. All the security dykes in Multan were checked and all were found in a good and strong state. The civil administration as well as the Pak Army’s Engineering Corps had expressed satisfaction over the security dykes, he added. The minister said that the Punjab Disaster Management Authority was playing an active and extensive role in mitigating flood situation. He said that monsoon rains were being monitored consciously. Multan Commissioner Asadullah Khan also briefed the minister and said that there was no immediate flood threat in the district and the situation was completely under control. He said that riverbed was de-silted to remove hurdle in frequent flow of river water.
‘NO IMMEDIATE FLOOD THREAT TO MULTAN’: There is no immediate flood threat to Multan, but the new spell of rains can bring high catastrophic in River Chenab and could inundate 121 villages in the district located across the river areas, officials said.
The joint teams of the City District Government and the Pakistan Army had started inspection of security dykes, erected to protect sensitive installations and city inhabitants, the officials said. If the flood was developed, more than 121 villages would be inundated across the district, they added. The City District Government had issued alert warnings to dwellers residing across the river bank and ordered for establishment of 23 relief camps in the next two days, they informed. The City District Government had provided life jackets and boats to Rescue 1122 and ordered them setting up camps in river areas for round the clock monitoring of flood, they informed. The administration had ordered the Irrigation officials to shift cranes and dumpers across the river areas, the officials added.
