The newly appointed AIGP Sindh Mushtaq Mahar seems determined to make a difference. Vowing to intensify the crackdown against criminals and corruption he has declared that his second most important aim would be to fight corruption within the Karachi police, improve their training and make them more efficient in maintaining law and order.
If pursued successfully this can prove to be a real game-changer for the provincial metropolis. Until now much of the police force has been part and parcel of the criminal structure flourishing in Karachi – starting from collecting small bribes to getting their shares in the profit of drugs, gambling and alcohol business. Extortion and other criminal actions are a regular feature of the police in our city. So installing an internal accountability system and getting rid of undesirable elements within the police force is a strategy that has to be welcomed. While the announcement of the newly inducted AIGP sounds good it will take not only time but a generous amount of dedication to overcome the hurdles that are going to turn up in the process. We the people of Karachi wish the AIGP the best of luck.
