The image of the armed forces is rising and the reputation of politicians is proportionately falling. This trend is unhealthy for democracy. We had the misfortune of having seven prime ministers in seven years – from 1951 to 1958. This drama of musical chairs prompted Gen Ayub Khan to send politicians packing for the next decade. This game of thrones later played by the PPP and the PML-N has sucked the generals into the fire of politics periodically. No wonder our celebrated Magna Carta called the Charter of Democracy died a premature death. We are still living in the pre-Ayub era of the 1950s because our so-called civilian leaders have learnt no lessons except repeating the same mistakes again and again.
But enough is enough and more of the same is no longer acceptable. The army is fighting terrorism and corruption while our deaf and blind political forces are promoting disorder and decay. If our political leadership does not accept any responsibility for any wrong and does not correct the suicidal course they may have to give way to the army to clean the messy stables.
