SWABI: Khairul Haseeb, Superintendent of Police (SP) of the Elite Force of the Bannu Circle, was martyred in his native Saleem Khan village by unidentified militants on Saturday when they opened fire on him as he came out from the nearby mosque.
He offered the Fajr prayer at a mosque in Mohallah Mirahmadkhel. He was assassinated as he came out of the mosque. Haseeb was a major in the Pakistan Army. He had joined the Elite Police Force of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
District Police Officer Sajjad Khan told the media that earlier there were reports that the assailants were two, but the latest information revealed that they were three. The three militants fled on a motorbike after the attack. The assailants fired three bullets, shooting the official dead outside the mosque.
Relatives of the deceased had to undergo another mental agony when the body of the officer was taken to the district headquarters hospital for autopsy. They had to wait for hours for the arrival of the doctors and medical staff to conduct the postmortem.
The autopsy was delayed due to the absence of the doctors and other staff. Taking prompt action, Health Minister Shahram Tarakai suspended medical superintendent of the hospital and all other paramedical staff and doctors, who were on duty at night, but were not present when the body of the fallen official was brought there.
The body was transported to the Police Lines at Shahmansoor for funeral. Additional Inspector General of Elite Force Tariq Javed, Deputy Inspector General of Mardan Saeed Wazir, District Police Officer Sajjad Khan, Deputy Superintendent of Police Izhar Shah, Members National Assembly Usman Tarakai and Aqibullah Khan, a number of politicians, notables and others attended the funeral.
He was laid to rest with state honours at his hometown. Several personalities and officials visited the family residence of the slain official and offered fateha for the departed soul. Inspector General of Police Nasir Khan Durrani,

Haseeb first joined Pakistan Air Force as an airman in 1981. Later, he joined the Pakistan Army as a junior commissioned officer in 1988. During his service in Pakistan Army, he was posted at Ghallanai, Quetta, Loralai, Lahore, Maidan and Peshawar.
The deceased retired from Pakistan Army as a major in December 2013 and later joined the KP Police Elite Service as Superintendent of Police. He was posted at Bannu in July 2014.The deceased left behind a widow, four daughters and two sons to mourn his death. One of his daughters is a third-year student at the Khyber Medical College, Peshawar and the other studies at the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar.
