The role of front runners of the anti-polio campaign, including female volunteers, in spreading awareness of the crippling disease was appreciated by Aseefa Bhutto Zardari while presiding over a meeting to review the campaign on Friday.
Referring to 30 cases of polio reported in Sindh last year, of which 23 alone were reported in Karachi, the meeting appreciated that no cases were reported in the city this year. However, the meeting decided to focus the anti-polio campaign on a total of 1.6 million children under the age of 5.
The meeting held at Bilawal House was also attended by Secretary Health Dr Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo, Provincial Coordinator for Polio Shehnaz Wazir Ali, Coordinator of Bill Gates and Melinda Foundation Dr Ahmed Ali Shaikh, Mohammad Usman Chachar, Dr Tomas Graien, World Health Organisation (WHO) Dr Temesgem Demeke and head of polio campaign at the UNICEF Aidan O'Leary.
