Completion of the signal-free Islamabad Expressway project from Zero Point to Rawat will not only ensure uninterrupted traffic flow at the main artery but also reduce travel time from 40 minutes to 14 minutes.
Capital Development Authority’s spokesman Ramzan Sajid while talking to APP said that the project would be executed in three phases to uplift the 25 km highway from Zero Point to Rawat.
He said first phase of the project was consisted of 4 km road from Zero Point to Faizabad including an interchange at I-8 crossing while second phase consisted of 8.5 km road from Faizabad to Koral Chowk and the third phase consisted of 12.5 km road from Koral to GT Road.
During the second phase the existing five-lanes would be rehabilitated with the addition of grade separated facility, he said adding service roads on either sides would be dualised and rehabilitated.
In the third phase, he said, 4 lanes on each carriageway with grade separated facility would be constructed.
This project will consist of six interchanges, which include full cloverleaf interchange at I-8 intersection, interchange at Sohan, full cloverleaf interchange at Khanna Intersection, full cloverleaf interchange at Airport-Karal Chowk, partial cloverleaf interchange and one interchange at G.T Road as well as up-gradation of Faizabad interchange.
Ramzan Sajid said in addition to these, six vehicular underpasses and overpasses would be also constructed at different busy locations.
Establishment of traffic control centers equipped with modern technologies and installation of latest security system are among the scope of the project, he said.
People living in Rawat, PWD, Media Town, Bahria Town and Jinnah Garden
had welcomed government’s announcement of the
project and said that it would ensure smooth flow of the traffic.
