Why have successive governments failed to manage natural disasters like the recent sudden deaths in Karachi due to excessive heat? Why do they not prepare in advance? After hundreds are reported dead the government is now arranging for artificial rainfall. This is not a permanent solution. It will be a temporary respite. Exposure to the heatwave could have been prevented if the government had launched mass awareness campaigns about the importance of trees and fighting pollution. Trees play an important role in reducing temperature and fighting climatic change. If the government had planted trees and reduced pollution there would have been no need for artificial rainfall. We always take notice of things when they become even worse to manage. This is our biggest dilemma. Naushaba Abid Islamabad
