WANA: Flash floods triggered by the outburst of clouds swept away six women and two children in South Waziristan, an official said on Saturday.
Confirming the death toll, Assistant Commissioner Wana Ameer Nawaz told reporters that flash floods swept away a pickup van carrying women and children in Gila Khan Killay in Toikhula tehsil in South Waziristan.
He said the vehicle was part of a wedding procession.
The dead women were identified as Zulekha, Gul Jana Bibi, Jamala Bibi, Nata Bibi, Kitaba Bibi and Gul Paro. The women belonged to the Miankhel tribe.
The local people and the Levies men rescued one woman, three children and the driver of the vehicle.
In Wana, the flash floods swept away two children in the Wucha Khwara area. However, the Levies force personnel rescued four others.
It was learnt that the flash floods also swept away several vehicles at the Rustam Bazaar in Wana.
The rain coupled with hailstorm damaged crops in Wana and Barmal tehsil. Farmers in Wana appealed to the authorities to compensate them for losses.
