KARACHI: PIA’s training camp for National Hockey Championship would begin from Wednesday (tomorrow), said Shahid Ali Khan, its deputy general manager sports.
The championship is to be held in Karachi from April 20 to May 2. He told ‘The News’ that PIA would organise its ten-day camp at Abdul Sattar Edhi Hockey Stadium in Karachi. He said that PIA would induct a few junior players in the team.
PIA used to be considered the country’s strongest hockey team, having won a record number of national championships, but last year they failed to reach the semi-finals stage. Sources said that due to financial constraints, PIA had not hired young players, because of which they failed to do well last year. But this year, they are trying to hire those young players who have been relieved by a bank recently, the sources said.
