KARACHI: Four Pakistani players reached the quarter-finals of the $20,000 Serena Hotels-Huawei International Squash Tournament at Mushaf Squash Complex, Islamabad, on Sunday.
In a major upset on the second day, Pakistan’s Amaad Fareed, ranked 122nd, defeated the third seed and World No 71 Shehab Essam from Egypt 4-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-7 in 43 minutes in the pre-quarter-finals.
Eighth seed Asim Khan from Pakistan thrashed unseeded Sean Conroy from Ireland 11-7, 13-11, 11-4 in 36 minutes. Fourth seed Farhan Mehboob smashed Syed Ali Mujtaba Bukhari 11-5, 11-5, 11-8 in just 28 minutes. Second seed Tayyab Aslam defeated unseeded Omar Elkattan from Egypt 11-9, 11-8, 13-11 in 33 minutes.
In the quarter-finals, Asim is to face top seed Karim Ali Fathi from Egypt, Farhan is up against Ammar Altamimi of Kuwait, Amaad Fareed will be playing against seventh seed Carlos Cornes Ribadas from Spain, and Tayyab is drawn against fifth seed Mohamed ElSherbini from Egypt.
