June 2 will be remembered as a bright day in our electoral history. The Election Commission – by cancelling the PK-95 by-election result – has proved that it can exercise the powers bestowed upon it by the constitution. The reason to annul the vote was that around 53,000 women were denied their right to vote in the by-election under unofficial agreements among contesting parties and local jirgas.
We also need to go back to the 2013 general elections wherein Dr Sirajul Haq won this seat by using the same tactics. It is time for the ECP to deliver justice.
