Svec upsets Hosny

ISLAMABAD: Martin Svec of Czech Republic surprised higher ranked Ahmed Hosny of Egypt as $30,000 Chief of the Air Staff-Serena Hotels International Squash Tournament began here at the Mushaf Ali Mir Complex on Monday.
Svec got better of Egyptian No 83 in just 26 minutes 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 to enter the second round. The first two games were neck-to-neck affair with Svec succeeded in controlling the games near the conclusion. The third one turned out to be a mere formality.
Spain’s Carlos Cornes Ribadas accounted for Pakistan’s Farhan Zaman 12-10, 11-0, 11-8. Pakistani never looked serious enough to take the fight back to Spanish player. Farhan showed some guts in the first game but was seen totally off coloured in rest of two. Farhan Mehboob overwhelmed Israr Ahmad to make it to the second round.
Leading players however enjoyed byes in the first round and would be seen in action in the second round today (Tuesday).
PSF Senior Vice President Air Marshal Shahid Akhtar Alvi graced the opening ceremony as chief guest.
