Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Hyder Jamali on Tuesday announced that women would be exempted from the traffic regulation under which wearing helmets has been declared mandatory for all bikers and pillion riders.
He directed the traffic police to exempt women after repeated appeals from citizens. In an earlier announcement, the police said in case of riding pillion without helmets, both would be fined.
The IGP took the decision after considering public appeals, adding that instructions had been conveyed to the city's traffic police. On what was the first day of the drive, Traffic DIG Ameer Sheikh said 2,200 motorcyclists and pillion riders were fined for not wearing helmets.
