‘EU lauds steps taken to control fruit fly attack on mango’

MULTAN: The European Union has appreciated measures taken by Pakistan to control attack of fruit fly on mangoes, said Punjab Agriculture Information Assistant Director Naveed Asmat Kahloon.
Talking to newsmen here on Monday, he said that the EU had issued a yellow card on mango export due to attack of fruit fly last year. He said that the Punjab government had taken the issue seriously. The mango growers were imparted special skills to curb the spread of fruit fly, he added. He said that the measures had improved the mango crop. He said that Pakistani mangoes stood at sixth number in the world regarding quality and taste. He said that the mangoes had become identity to Pakistan in the world and indicators showed gradual increase in its export after the exporters met the international criteria. The mangoes had fetched Rs 4.9 billion foreign exchange to the country last year, he added.
