105 vehicles with illegal number plates impounded

LAHORE: Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) registered 282 cases against travellers on violation of traffic rules.

PHP teams impounded 105 vehicles for having fake or unauthorised green number plates. Twenty-two vehicles were impounded for violating Loudspeaker Act. As many as 89 cases were registered against people for installing prohibited gas cylinders in their vehicles.

bodies: The bodies of a couple who had died in a fire incident at home at Iqbal Town on Monday late have been handed over to their families after completing legal formalities. The victims have been identified as Manzoor, 35 and Nazia, 32, residents of Nizam Block, Allama Iqbal Town. The victims are survived by five children who were sleeping in another room at the time of the incident.

The fire had erupted due to gas leakage and the victims suffocated. Rescuers controlled the fire. Body found: A 40-year-old man, unidentified so far, was found dead near Expo Centre in the Nawab Town police area on Tuesday. Police removed the body to morgue.

Meeting: A meeting regarding the UN-HABITAT programme “Safer Cities for Urban Development” was held at Punjab Safe Cities Authority headquarters here.

The meeting was attended by PSCA Chief Operating Officer Akbar Nasir, chief administration officer, Lahore Metropolitan Corporation chief officer, LDA chief engineer, Rescue 1122 director general, Provincial Disaster Management Authority director and the officers from Lahore Police and city traffic police.

The participants reviewed the preparations to meet a UN-HABITAT team which would visit Lahore in the first week of March. This programme will lead to improved civil security and sync urban development, uprooting the menace of crime in a more effective and strategy-driven way, said a PSCA spokesperson. PSCA always cooperates with UN and international stakeholders for research and training activities, he added. The Safer Cities for Urban Development programme of the United Nations primarily focuses tackling of urban crime and violence engaging the programme participants in researching safety indicators and developing city safety index, crucial for policy making when defining safety conscious urban development. It also focuses on providing recommendations to the participating cities on how to improve their service delivery and monitoring processes in this regard.

Additional charge: Punjab government has given additional charge of Director General Anti Corruption Establishment (ACE) Punjab to senior member revenue Tariq Najeeb Najmi, The News has learnt.

As per notification, senior member revenue Tariq Najeeb Najmi who also holds office of Chief Land Commissioner and Relief Commissioner Board of Revenue Punjab has been given additional charge of ACE DG till the appointment of regular DG. On February 19, the government had amended ACE services rules to raise the age bar of DG ACE from existing 55 years to 63 years.

Workshop: Punjab University Institute of Social and Cultural Studies (ISCS) organised a workshop ‘Urban Sociology: A Western Perspective’ in which Prof Dr Sebastian Kurtenbach from University of Applied Sciences, Munster University Germany was the resource person.

ISCS Director Prof Dr Rubeena Zakar, MPhil and PhD students of the institute participated in the workshop. Prof Kurtenbach highlighted various offshoots of western perspective urban sociology and informed the participants about latest research work of scholars in the subject.

Dr Rubeena Zakar said PU ISCS had long-standing academic relations with German universities and this cross-cultural interaction would be beneficial for the capacity building of PU students.

Later, Prof Kurtenbach also called on PU Vice Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmad and discussed the future collaboration between PU and Munster University. The VC expressed his desire to strengthen Punjab University’ relations with German universities.
