This refers to the article, ‘Fata: a comedy of reforms’ (May 13) by Ayaz Wazir. The article seems to be written on the premise that no one other than Fata-born thinkers can bring about reforms in the tribal areas.
The only rule that brought about order in Fata was during the British Raj whose members, British officers, were neither born in Fata nor spoke the Pashto language and were not familiar with local customs. Having served in Fata for a reasonable span of time it has become abundantly clear to me that the misuse of special quota in government services, medical and other professional colleges reserved for Fata is the primary cause of underdevelopment of the region. After studying in professional colleges or joining government services by virtue of the quota system the beneficiaries of the quota system avoid even visiting the tribal areas. Even after retirement they settle in big cities. How can Fata see progress when those who are groomed to become professionals or bureaucrats refuse to even visit their ancestral regions?
