This refers to the news report, ‘Suicide attacks, sectarian killings against Islam: Ulema’ (May 18). Obviously one would welcome such a clear statement on suicide bombings. However, one finds even the Lahore statement a bit incomplete and ineffective. What about timed bombs, attacks on unarmed civilians and religious minorities?
Another major area to be addressed is the issue of unchecked fatwas declaring others to be outside the circle of Islam. It is not enough to condemn one form of terrorism while ignoring its other evil shapes. Having different views on religious issues should not set off alarm bells but if this means hatred and incompatibility towards others then this issue should be tackled today – not tomorrow.
