World Press Freedom Day observed

Rawalpindi: Communication and Media Studies Department of Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) in collaboration with Susan B. Anthony Reading Room (SBARR) organised a seminar to observe ‘World Press Freedom Day’.
Fouzia Shahid, secretary general of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist addressed the seminar as the chief guest while Dr. Shamim Zaidi, media advisor, FJWU faculty members and students has also attended the seminar. The objective is to educate students to think and act as responsible professionals globally.
Dr. Shamim Zaidi welcomed the guest on behalf of Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Samina Amin Qadir. She elaborated about the history of Press Freedom Day and said that media is a powerful segment of every society. It can play a vital role in creating, moulding and propagating public opinion at large.
Addressing the audience, Ms. Fouzia said that media is playing a great role in educating the society as well as strengthening the democratic institution. Talking about investigative journalism she reiterated that very idea is still uncommon in Pakistan. She explained the difference between exclusive stories and investigative stories in a newspaper. She was of the view that to cover a good investigative story, media practitioners should do proper research and facts and figures regarding the story must be taken into account. To depict the true picture media persons should need to avoid partiality and report on the basis of evidence. She also shared her experiences with the students to provide them an insight on the topic and urged that media related institutions and students must play their effective role for improving today’s media.
