Pakistan is facing the worst power crisis of its history. This has affected almost all segments of society. Students are unable to study, doctors cannot practice, offices and factories are not working smoothly, etc. If this situation drags on for some more time we will miss out on many fronts – economic and social. Already we are lagging far behind many regional countries.
We need both short- and long-term planning to solve this problem. In the short-term, we should manage our affairs and avoid extravagant activities, pilferage and overuse that are a drain on the limited electricity available to us. And in the long-term, we should diversify our sources of energy to include solar, wind and nuclear power as well, in addition to hydropower so that this crisis does not emerge in the future.
