Non-arrest of cop, who killed widow
Villagers baton-charged for protesting against police

MULTAN: Villagers, including relatives of a widow, who was allegedly killed by a constable some days ago, staged a demonstration against Sital Mari police for not arresting the accused here on Friday.
The protesters blocked Khanewal Road for two hours to register their protest. They also burnt tyres. Residents of Sajanpur, located on Khanewal Road, also joined the protest. The protesters were chanting slogans against police.
On information, Sital Mari police rushed to the spot and allegedly baton-charged the protesters. Police also arrested 20-25 protesting villagers, including complainant Rahim Bakhsh.
Meanwhile, talking to newsmen, the protesters said that Constable Rashid of Sital Mari police station had allegedly killed widow Jatoo Mai some days ago. They said that though police registered a case against the accused constable, yet they were reluctant to arrest him. They said that the accused had illegally occupied a piece of land of the widow and she got a case registered against him. The deceased’s family said that Jatoo Mai filed an application before the DCO for getting her land retrieved from the constable. They said that Constable Rashid with his four unidentified accomplices entered the house of Jatoo Mai and allegedly killed her on March 25. Ghulam Abbas, a protestor, said that the accused constable also resorted to aerial firing at the Qul of widow Jatoo Mai and threatened her family.
Meanwhile, police said that the protestors blocked the road for many hours. They said that the protesters injured two constables – Altaf Hussain and Hashim. The injured constables were under treatment in a hospital. However, the protesting villagers denied the allegation of injuring the two constables, saying that police had themselves injured the constables to create logic for baton charging them. Police said that they would register criminal cases against the protesters on the charges of injuring the constables and taking the law and order in their hands.
