PESHAWAR: The Akhuwwat Foundation distributed 19 wheelchairs among the disabled persons at an event held in Mardan district.

The event was held at Ghundo Shamozai in Katlang tehsil in Mardan district. It was attended by local elders, notables, government officials and the recipients and their family members. The Shama Welfare Organization organized the event and helped Akhuwat to identify the needy among the disabled for providing them the wheelchairs.

The disabled who were provided the wheelchairs hailed from different villages in Katlang tehsil. Among them were men and women and children. The wheelchairs were sent by Akhuwat from Lahore. Another 22 wheelchairs would be sent soon to bring the total to 42.

Akhuwat Mardan regional head Rizwanullah and his colleague Faizan Ashraf attended the distribution ceremony. Rizwanullah in his speech noted that Akhuwat began its journey in 2001 when its founder Dr Muhammad Amjad Saqib arranged an interest-free loan of Rs10,000 for a widow who returned it after six months. “Now Akhuwat has provided interest-free credit of Rs65 billion and its recovery rate is nearly 99 percent. It has enabled hundreds of thousands of families to stand on their feet,” he added.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Shama Welfare Organization head Zameen Nawab, Deputy Superintendent of Police Gulshed Khan, and senior journalist Rahimullah Yusufzai who had requested Akhuwat to provide the wheelchairs to the poor and needy disabled persons.
