Improper police probe: CJP chairs incumbent, former IGPs meeting
ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar constituted a committee headed by Afzal Ali Shigri, former Inspector General Police, to suggest ways and means to bring improvements in the police system. The CJP formed the committee while chairing a meeting regarding improvements in the police investigation process, on Tuesday, said a press release.
The chief justice directed Mr Shigri to come up with terms of reference within 15 days. The meeting was held at Supreme Court building which was attended by retired as well as serving Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) including Syed Masood Shah, Tariq Pervaiz, Shoukat Javed, Afzal Ali Shigri, Tariq Khosa, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shoaib Suddle, Fayaz Toru, Asad Jahangir and serving IGPs Mr Arif Nawaz, (IG-Punjab), A D Khawaja, (IGP-Sindh), Salahuddin (IGP-KP), Moazzam Jah (IGP-Balochistan) and Azam Taimori (IGP-ICT).
Talking on the issue of police investigation in criminal cases, the Chief Justice told the participants that it had been observed that in majority of criminal cases, police investigation was improper and substandard and drastic improvements were needed so that criminal cases in courts could withstand judicial scrutiny. Chief Justice asked them to deliberate upon the issue and suggest ways and means to bring improvements in the system.
