Karachi’s water shortage has paralysed the lives of its citizens. But many people believe that this crisis has been carefully manufactured. The tanker mafia, which is quite active in the city, appears to have its own vested interests. When pipelines run dry in the city, the mafia gains the opportunity to sell water at higher prices. The truth is that these powerful forces have been successful in this regard. Some parts of the city greatly rely on water tankers. Each tanker is sold for thousands of rupees and the pricing policy is mostly arbitrary.
It is the responsibility of the government to provide water to its residents. It is unfortunate that water has become a luxury item in our country. The tanker mafia enjoys access to clean drinking water. Water tankers are filled from the pipelines that are supposed to directly supply water to our houses. However, since the supply is disturbed and is used to fill tankers, water doesn’t make it to our homes. It is time the government controlled the activities of this fast-growing mafia in the city.
