The simultaneous attacks on two churches in Lahore this Sunday were devastating, resulting in the loss of precious lives while injuring many worshippers. This is not the first time that the Christian community has been targeted in Punjab. In earlier attacks, entire localities were looted and burned to ashes. Soon after the Sunday bombing, angry mobs went on a rampage to protest the government’s reluctance to rein in terrorist outfits in Punjab.
But what happened to Chaudhry Nisar is equally questionable. While speaking in the National Assembly, the interior minister was not much worried about the church bombings, terming them not unusual because mosques and shrines have also been bombed. His focus was on the lynching incident that has tarnished Pakistan’s image. Then he updated the scoreboard by telling assembly members how many Christians or Muslims died during this incident. Why was the minister doing that? All those who died were Pakistanis. It does not matter which religion or sect they belong to. I doubt anyone will take Chaudhry Nisar, who is unable to arrest the Lal Masjid cleric even after the registration of two FIRs, seriously.
